LEADERS REPORTS
Kestrel Beavers – No report
Swan Beavers – During March one of the Beavers parents came down to Beavers. Cynthia explained all about St Patrick’s Day with a story about St Patrick, and with the help of Ruadhan, they did some Irish dancing. The Beavers thought this was good. We had a night of growing cress on blotting paper and parsley in glass jars. Zoe Lovell ran a craft night when the Beavers made Mothers Day cards and bookmarks. Sharon Betts ADC/Beaver Scouts invested 3 new Beavers. We then made Easter nests decorated with mini Easter eggs and the Beavers and Leaders each had an Easter egg to take home and enjoy. We broke up for Easter on 6th April until 27th April when we will practise our marching and talk about the Royal Wedding.
Viking Cubs – Three Viking Cubs took part in the District Cubs Junk Modelling competition. Joe Febrey-Watts came 3rd overall with his model of a tractor. We have been concentrating on badge work over the last couple of weeks doing the Map Reader and Home Help badges. Only 14 Cubs attended last week (due to Easter Holidays) and made Easter nests, cards and posters. We also invested Callum Sedgewick. A note has gone out regarding St George’s Day but I don’t think we’ll have a great response.
Saxon Cubs – On Pack nights we have had two evenings run by Paul and Aden as part of their training. The evenings were based on photography and mini pioneering and were very successful. Graham a paramedic, who was an ex Saxon, came to take the Cubs through their Emergency Aid Badge work and we are following this up. We have done egg blowing and decorating and made baskets and this week we made chocolate nests. We have continued with the Membership Award and have invested 5 new members. Toby Papworth was made up to Senior Sixer and Zac Tuthill his assistant. We took part in the District Tug of war where our team of 4 boys and 2 girls regained the Winner Trophy and all Cubs attending ran in the Cross Country. We also took part in the District Junk Modelling Competition. Our sponsored Hike was run by Paul, who set the questions on the way, before ending up with a picnic and further activities at the Sand Hills. We were joined by the Scouts, who were a great help with the wide games, and family members. Everyone enjoyed the day. Our visit to the Houses of parliament, at the invitation of our MP, Alistair Burt, was brilliant. After a guided Tour, Alistair Burt came to meet us in Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the building, where he talked to the 27 Cubs before answering questions, which they had prepared earlier. He finished up sitting on the floor signing autographs for them and he also signed certificates for them. Paul was invested by GSL on the steps inside Westminster Hall, with a big audience. Well done Paul! We ate our lunch in Westminster Park then visited the Jewel Tower across the road, before catching the coach home and seeing the sights of London. A truly memorable day. The Cubs have written letters of thanks to Alistair Burt as he was so good with them.
Norman Cubs – No report
Scouts – This month we concentrated on several evenings towards the Creative Challenge: Comic Relief - We donned our red noses and stickers ready for an evening of comedy sketches and jokes in aid of Comic Relief. These were combined with real life stories of young people from around the world who have benefitted from the fund. Subs were donated to Comic Relief. Thanks to Robin for helping that evening. Marble run - We made marble runs from junk. There was a competition for most interesting, longest run and teamwork. Hike - As soon as the clocks went forward we went out for the evening on a hike which included a map and observation quiz. (Highlighting the route, calculating the distance walked and map symbols) Indoor Olympics - At our Indoor Olympics evening, the patrols chose a country, made a flag and took part in the events of paper plate discus, swimming stroke relay, rowing shuffle, aeroplane javelins, standing start long jump, 400m backwards walk. The Closing Ceremony included the Investiture of Jack Catt and Tom Blake. Sponsored Hike - 12 Scouts took part in the Sponsored Hike with Saxon Cubs – thanks to Paul Traynor for organising the route and quiz. We are not meeting during school holidays and several Fridays are bank holidays too. This makes our next event the St George’s day District Scout Camp at Boyd Field. We have 15 Scouts attending the camp. Andrew will be helping but we need 1 or 2 other leaders or adults to help.
Explorers – Over the last month the Explorers have continued with Award work, which included a camp when two Explorer teams went on their practise Duke of Edinburgh hike. Thank you to Tony for planning the camp as the final part of his Nights Away training. He was assessed and passed by Peter Cheney. Well done Tony! Last week, instead of having an evening meeting, we all decided to meet up to go bowling, which was successful. This month we held our Annual General Meeting when the new committee was elected. The Chairperson is Tom Hull. The Treasurer is Peter Rogan. The Secretary is Jack Culbert. The 4 additional committee members are Henry Uings, Stephen King, Jonathan Chambers and Jess Peel. Good Luck to the new committee!.
RACE NIGHT March 2011
We send a special thank you to everyone who helped us to raise over £1,000 during the annual Race Night on Saturday 19 March. This will be a huge help towards running costs for the group.
